About Orchid Isle Tutoring's Owner and Founder, Linda Kay Murphy.

I started my life in education in 1971 as a kindergarten teacher, then worked with the Head Start and Follow Through programs. From there I went into Adult Education and G.E.D test preparation. In 1982 I came to Hilo, Hawaii, and started working as a one-on-one tutor while substituting for grades K through 12 in the public school system. I started Orchid Isle Tutoring in 1984.

I believe that education is one of the most important aspects of life. Not only does education offer enhanced opportunities in career and income, but increased understanding and appreciation of life outside the workplace as well.

People learn in different ways: some students are primarily visual learners, others require greater auditory or tactile input, while still others may have a more kinesthetic learning style. Each student has their own, unique combination of strengths, motivations, and interests, and I believe all of these are essential parts of the learning experience, and must be acknowledged and addressed. 

Here at Orchid Isle Tutoring, all of our students are pre-tested using two separate standardized evaluations. These, and ongoing assessment during the tutoring process, allow us to tailor an instructional program that addresses each individual’s needs, abilities, and goals.

Here at Orchid Isle Tutoring, we believe that family and friendship are vital parts of the educational process. Parents are kept informed of the goals, curriculum, methodologies, and progress of their child’s tutoring through written prescriptive, progress, and final reports.
